Prickly pear is a juicy plant similar to cactus, native from Mexico, that seems to have been introduced in the Mediterranean area by Christopher Columbus in 1500. Thanks to its widespread diffusion in Sicily and its historical and vast use in regional cuisine, the Ministry of Agriculture policy recognizes Sicilian prickly pear as a typical Sicilian product.
