Sandalwood, grown in India, where its cultivation is subject to very strict laws enforced by the state, is not only used for its fragrance, but also for pieces of furniture for ceremonial costumes and bridal trousseaux that absorb the exotic scent of the wood. It is one of the most important trees in Buddhist paradise, where it is said to have been used to build the chariot of the sun.
