Carnations are widely grown on the Ligurian Riviera. According to Greek mythology, the carnation sprang from the tears of a shepherd who was seduced and abandoned by the goddess Diana. In Catholic legend, however, it was the tears of the Virgin Mary, shed at the foot of Jesus' cross, that gave life to the first carnations. In floral symbolism, the carnation is synonymous with fidelity.
